October

 September - October 2026 - December

A new bird: Snow Bunting!! At the dam. Woohoo!!

Hand-held, waxing WANING (whoops) Hunter's Moon. Unprocessed. This is why photos of the Moon that is not full are so much more interesting. The line between day and night (called the terminator) exposes the topography so nicely because of shadowing caused by the low angle of sunlight.

Oct. 29
 Playlist: band practice tonight.

Snagged from FB because it's so funny.

Oct. 28
Bed-head du jour. Hair much cleaner than Zoom pic.

Oct. 27
Unknown caterpillar found walking the dam. I moved it to the grass so it wouldn't get stepped on.
Google Lens says "yellow-striped armyworm"..
Thirty seconds of zen?
Without my glasses and much less zoomed in I thought this might have been a bird or squirrel.

Full Hunters Moon at 5am, through the trees. Sequence includes Barred Owl recorded 2009-07-16..

Oct. 26
Zoom time
Interesting how the reflections show different colours.
Somebody suggested that water reflects differently depending how clear it is.
Somebody else: "Red (leaves) + Blue (water) = Green (reflection) My explanation and sticking to it. "

I took a selfie or two at the dam with a nice colourful tree behind me but Nancy said I looked bad, so here's a nursing home selfie that she liked better.

Oct. 25

With a little patience I felt like I gained the trust of this pristine cabbage butterfly and was rewarded with some up-close quality time. Not what I expected for this time of year.
A bit fuzzy but catching a butterfly in flight is pure luck.
It doesn't care what the flower looks like.
Jesse Carter, Jeff Lopez, Joey Andrasik, Jim Vickers, James Knight; me (another one of Nancy's faves, the only song I did, I had to quit with a frog in my throat)  ...
𝐎𝐜𝐭. 𝟐𝟑 𝐮𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞: 𝐚 𝐟𝐞𝐰 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 songs 𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐞𝐝.

Seasonal colours at the dam.

Jesse Kelley making me laugh

Open Mic Playlist. More added (Oct. 17), including the above pictured chuckle.
Represented in random order: Blue Moondogs, John Harrow; Jack Deering; Jim Vickers; Jesse Kelley; Steve Baggett; me. Audio from the board.

A longish drive to the dentist reminded me that an important odometer reading would probably happen on the way home. Of course I totally forgot after reminding myself, understandably, with the distraction of dental work. But the universe tapped me at just the right time, the reading was 4444 exactly when I looked down! What are the chances?! Sadly, my phone had been soaking up rays on the passenger seat and refused to take any photos until it cooled down. Sigh!

A week ago (Oct. 6) I was trying to find a suitable spot to view the lunar occultation of Jupiter from Export PA. I didn't try hard enough and stayed in bed at the designated time (3:30am). Fortunately my niece Erin was out running and captured this on her phone.

The "Old Truck", a '58 Chevy panel with 235 engine (a number etched in my brain).
A FB 2020 "memory". Truck art by Ron Bartnik, very early seventies. Thanks to Terry Caywood for digging this up! High school friends Jack V. and Jim M..
Trombonists leave your shirts on.

Oct. 12

Brothers, and a link to audio of the owl I heard (and recorded) just prior to Zooming.
It's only a six second clip.

Flashback, thanks to Nick for finding this from my trumpet teacher.

Oct. 11
Goose butts at the dam.
From a distance I couldn't ID those white blobs that appeared and disappeared.

Oct. 10

Virginia trip

Playing music with Nick in E & S's lovely home.

Me, Sandy, Edwin, Nick

Detail of the above, I like the extended hind legs.

Edwin and Nick on our walk along the canal in Fredericksburg.

I didn't get any hummingbird photos but it was so nice to see them (at feeder).
